Jorvik Viking Centre, Coppergate, open April to October, a re-creation of the ancient Viking city. Here visitors are trundled back through history in little 'ghost train' cars, past Vikings going about their daily business. There are authentic smells and sounds, and snatches of conversation just as could have been experienced by the passerby 1000 years ago. Magnus Magnusson commentates on it all. Jorvik has been developed from an actual archaeological site which was discovered when excavations were being made for a shopping centre. They cleverly tell you how long you will have to wait in the queue.

Castle Museum, housed in the former debtors prison beside Clifford's Tower, Open All Year, one of the finest folk museums in the world, including a perfectly re-constructed Victorian cobbled street.

The Yorkshire Museum, Museum Gardens, Open All Year deals with the county's history, and two art galleries are outstanding: the City Art Gallery, Exhibition Square, Open All Year, which contains a rich collection of English and Italian works, and the Impressions Gallery of Photography, 17 Colliergate, Open All Year, closed Sundays and Mondays.

The railway naturally features in the visitor's York. The National Railway Museum, one of Britain's major railway tourist attractions, is close to the station at Leeman Road. Built on an actual railway site, its great hall has two turntables round which are grouped historic speed-record breaking locomotives and railway rolling stock. Also for railway enthusiasts is the Model Railway Exhibition at 53 Scaldergate and Rail Riders World beside the Railway Station (both Open All Year), landscaped 00 gauge model showing British Rail as it is today.

York Theatre Royal, at St Leonard's Place, presents plays and musicals, and regular special concerts; York Festival is one of Britain's most important festivals with music, opera and drama, and a presentation of the ancient guilds' Mystery Plays every four years (next in 1988). There are two Brass Rubbing centres: York Brass Rubbing Centre, St Williams College, Open All Year and Micklegate Brass Rubbing Studio. Monthly Horse-racing meetings take place at Knavesmire between May and October, and Harness-racing is held at Green Hammerton most Saturdays from May to October.
