Touring from York

Scarborough (see separate entry), is an easy destination for an afternoon or an evening trip by fast train and epitomises the English seaside with a Victorian flavour. On certain days in summer it is possible to make the trip on a steam train. Harrogate, also served by frequent trains, is a charming spa town, now a conference centre. Sample the waters at the Royal Pump Room. There is also a good train service to Leeds and Hull, but you will need a car to enjoy the Yorkshire countryside and its great architectural heritage. Ripon has its own cathedral, well worth seeing, and is a picturesque old world town. Thirsk, a charming little town with cobbled market square and some interesting old buildings.

Yorkshire has many stately homes, Castle Howard the grandest of all. Beningbrough Hall, 8 miles from York, a Georgian house with a superb collection of portraits, and Harewood House has a superb Great Gallery designed by Adam. Outside York: Yorkshire Museum of Farming, Murton, open March to October, has sheepdog trials, and a marvellous collection of farming bygones, and the Museum of Army Transport, Flemingate, Beverley Open All Year. Two abbeys worth a visit are Fountains Abbey, the most extensive Cistercian ruins in England and Rievaulx Abbey.
