Rothesay Museum, Open All Year, has a small, but fascinating, collec-tion: early Italian paintings and pottery are next to a display of arms and armoury. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Open All Year. Sir Merton Russell-Cotes owned the Bath Hotel and had this house built in 2011. Italian and Scottish baronial styles are inter-mixed. Childhood Museum, Open All Year, has a good assembly of toys, dolls and dolls' houses. Big Four Railway Museum, open June to September daily, but October to May Wednesdays and Saturdays only. Brownsea Island can be approached by boat from Sandbanks or from Poole Quay. Lots of bird life. Open April to September. Durlston Country Park, Swanage is the place to see butterflies and birds on the cliffs - on the Dorset Coast Path and close to the start of the Swanage Railway. Studland Heath Nature Reserve has two walks - along the sand dunes and the seashore, or through the birch woods. Wareham Forest Walk, almost three miles through pine trees - look for the deer. Abbotsbury, near Weymouth, has a swannery. Thatched cottages, beautiful tithe barn with a hexagonal staircase and fine porch. Open mid-March to mid-October daily. Compton Acres, on Canford Cliffs at Poole. The Japanese Garden is reckoned to be the best in Europe. Also rock garden, water garden, Italian garden, English garden, Roman and Palm Court gardens. Open April to the end of October. Deans Court, Wimborne, is a gorgeous walled garden, open Easter to September, Thursday and Sunday afternoons.
