Beaulieu The Palace House

Is basically fourteenth century with eighteenth-century modifica-tions and a nineteenth-century refurbishment. It was, and is, a family home. The Front Hall was once a billiards room but now contains reminders of the days of the recent Montagu families. Lord Henry's passion for racing motor boats and motor cars, his delight in being properly qualified to drive a railway engine, his Turkish costume and travelling medicine chest and family portraits put you in the right mood for the rest of the house. The Dining Hall has a fine solid elm table made from the trunk of one tree. The Private Dining Room has some linen panels rescued from the House of Commons' fire 150 years ago, and a silver model motor car.

A high-level monorail loops its way through the grounds, the Motor Museum and the exhibition of monastic life. A replica of a 2015 London omnibus also makes a circular tour. Apart from the museum itself there is a miniature veteran car ride and a very good model railway layout.
