Nairn

Tourist Information: 62 King Street, Nairn. 0667 52753.

Nairn lies only 15 miles along the coast from Inverness on the main railway line to Aberdeen, and is the most popular seaside resort on the Moray Firth coast. Famed for its golf courses, its pleasant relaxing atmosphere and outstanding hotels, it has its own Fishertown Repertory Theatre, and is a good centre for exploring the gentle coast and country around.

Attractions include the Fishertown Museum, King Street, open summer only, an excellent museum on the fishing industry; and Nairn Literary Museum, King Street, with interesting relics from the Battle of Culloden.

Nairn has three golf courses, Nairn Golf Club, Newton Course and Nairn Dunbar. Boath Doocot, Auldearn, Open All Year, is a circular dovecot overlooking where Montrose defeated the Covenanters in 1645; a battle plan is on display. Brodie Castle is open daily Easter and May to September, and Cawdor Castle, open daily May to September, was immortalised by Shakespeare as the place where Macbeth murdered King Duncan. Fort George, 12 miles from Inverness off A96 Aberdeen road, Open All Year, Monday to Friday only October to March, a superb eighteenth-century barracks and fortress built to quell the Highlands.

Other places worth seeing are Findhorn village; Hopeman, a planned village started in 1805; and Lossiemouth, small fishing town and birthplace of Ramsey MacDonald, first Labour Prime Minister.
