Entertainment in and around Edinburgh
The Festival - music, opera, dance, drama, and art - is clearly the main event each year and is held in the latter part of August and early September. A Fringe and Film Festival takes place at the same time. Outside the Festival there are concerts throughout the year by the Scottish National and Scottish Chamber Orchestras, as well as the Scottish Baroque Ensemble. Touring orchestras and artists perform regularly in the Usher Hall. There are theatres with resident and touring companies, cinemas, dancing and cabaret and a Brass Band annual contest in Princes Street Gardens.
The Royal Highland Show takes place in June, at Ingliston, but the Scottish National Zoological Park, the Edinburgh Zoo, and the Royal Botanic gardens are always open, the latter with a Gallery of Modern Art. In and around the city there are lots of gardens, country parks and some wonderful walks, especially around the Pentland Hills, the Braids and Blackford, or nearby the Waters of Leith. As for sport, there is everything; motor racing, horse racing, greyhounds, pony trekking and riding stables, an ice rink, bowls, tennis, golf, swimming, the largest artificial ski slope in Britain, as well as the famous Meadowbank Sports Centre which does have temporary membership for visitors.
