Alton Towers

Tourist Information, Alton Towers, North Staffordshire, ST1O 4DB. 0538 702499.

Along the B5032 from Ashboume to Cheadle is Alton Towers, which claims to be 'Britain's only world rated leisure park'. The grounds were laid out by Charles, 15th Earl of Shrewsbury, and expanded by his nephew John. The park covers 800 acres and

has 'super-rides and sensational experiences', gardens, boating lake, nature trails, a circus under a Big Top and a 360 cinema screen as well as shopping arcades, tea shops and a restaurant. There are sixty rides at Alton Towers including the Corkscrew Roller-Coaster, the Black Hole and the Pirate Ship, and more are being added all the time, whilst others are being made more daring.

The main feature of this place is that you pay once to get in and then all the amenities are free, so you can take the rides as many times as you like. It can be as stomach-churning, head-whirling, or as gentle a day out as you choose. The rides operate from 10.00am until the time indicated on the entrance gates. Special prices for senior citizens, children and parties. Special help for the disabled. Free car parking. Open late March until early November.
